Angelina Jolie concludes visit to Bangladesh, urges sustained support for Rohingya refugees and calls on Myanmar to take necessary steps to end displacement and statelessness

Visiting Bangladesh this week, Angelina Jolie, the Special Envoy for the UN Refugee Agency, said the world must not turn away from the nearly one million Rohingya refugees who have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh. She urged continued support for those who have been displaced, until the Myanmar authorities show the genuine commitment needed to end a decades-long cycle of violence and displacement.

UN in Syria and SARC deliver humanitarian assistance to 40,000 people in Rukban

The United Nations and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) are carrying out their largest ever humanitarian convoy to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance to more than 40,000 displaced people at the remote Rukban ‘makeshift’ settlement in south-eastern Syria, on the border with Jordan. The convoy on Febuary 6 arrived, and the operation is expected to last approximately one week.

UN launches plan to address humanitarian needs in Libya in 2019

Seven years after the revolution, hundreds of thousands of people across Libya, live in dire conditions. In a bid to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs for 552,000 most vulnerable people living in Libya, the United Nations together with the Government of National Accord launched the 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP2019), seeking US$202 million, to continue providing health support, protection, water, and shelter, on Febuary 5.

Angelina Jolie, the Special Envoy for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is visiting Bangladesh this week. Bangladesh has been heavily affected by the influx of more than 730,000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar since August 2017 and now hosts nearly a million refugees. The majority of refugees – more than 620,000 people – live in just one area: Kutupalong, the largest refugee settlement anywhere in the world today.
