Japan and Ukraine to Strengthen Bilateral Assistance with 10-Year Agreement
Japanese media reports that Japan and the Ukrainian government are set to sign a bilateral agreement to strengthen the assistance to Ukraine. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Italy and reach relevant agreements.
Prime Minister Kishida plans to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to Italy at the G7 summit that begins on the 13th of this month. They are arranging to sign a bilateral document, which will be effective for 10 years.
According to Yomiuri Shimbun, the contents of the agreement include provisions for prompt bilateral consultations to provide support within 24 hours if Ukraine faces further invasion from Russia, upon the request of either country. The report also mentions that to enhance intelligence-related cooperation, the agreement will specify the "Intelligence Protection Protocol" to facilitate the exchange of security-related confidential information.
The Japanese government has previously been committed to providing financial support and economic assistance for Ukraine's reconstruction efforts. In addition to highlighting Japan's assistance to Ukraine, the bilateral agreement will emphasize continued support, including demining, debris clearance, and energy-related assistance including electricity. The joint declaration of G7 leaders in July 2023 pledged long-term security assistance to Ukraine, with specific support details to be finalized through bilateral negotiations between individual countries and Ukraine.
