Putin Officially Listed as a Presidential Candidate in Russia, Confirmed for Another 6-Year Term in Office
The Russian Central Election Commission has officially registered Vladimir Putin as a candidate for the March presidential election. It is almost certain that Putin will win this election and continue to rule for another six years, becoming the longest-serving ruler in Russia since the 18th century.
Putin, who is 71 years old, has been leading Russia since the beginning of this century. He has won the presidential election four times and has only briefly served as prime minister. Under the current system in Russia, the opposition has almost become non-existent.
The Russian Central Election Commission stated that although liberal challenger Boris Nadezhdin has passed the threshold for registering as a presidential candidate, it is still unclear whether Nadezhdin will be allowed to run. It is expected that Putin will not face any real competitors, and the Kremlin has also stated that Nadezhdin will not be a worrying opponent.
Putin has won the presidential elections in 2000 and 2004, each with a term of 4 years. In 2012, Putin ran for president for the third time and won, serving a term of 6 years. In the 2018 election, he ran for president for the fourth time and was re-elected until 2024.
In March 2020, Putin signed a constitutional amendment proposed by himself, breaking the term limit imposed by the constitution at that time. The amendment was passed in July of that year. Therefore, according to the regulations, Putin can run for president for two more terms and may continue to rule until 2036.
