A leader of one of Burma's rebel groups, the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), said on December 12 that he had reached a cease-fire agreement with the Burmese military government, and that Burma's neighboring country, China, had sent representatives to participate in the talks.

From the overthrow of the democratically elected government in 2021 until the end of October 2023, the Burmese military was at war with rebel groups. The rivalry between the rebel groups, which are trying to end the military's control of their region, has led to intense violence along Burma's northern border with China.

The Three Brothers Alliance, a group of Burmese rebels - the National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), the Rakhine Army (AA) and the National Liberation Army of Deung Aung San Suu Kyi (TNLA) - is the biggest challenge to the Burmese military junta's seizure of power since the war began, and has led to concerns in China about a possible disruption of trade and an influx of refugees at the border.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said at a regular press conference on December 12 that from 10 to 11, under China's good offices and promotion, representatives of the Burmese army and the rebel Three Brothers Alliance organization held peace talks in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, and reached a formal ceasefire agreement.

However, the Burmese military government did not immediately confirm the news.
