Upon taking office on December 10, Argentine President Javier Milei announced massive austerity and currency devaluation policies to reverse Argentina's economic woes. One of these policies was the rehiring of more than 5,000 employees hired by the previous government during the current year. According to consultancy Ieral-Fundación Mediterránea, 2.2% of Argentina's GDP is used to pay the salaries of government employees, of which there are about 350,000 in Argentina.

Javier Milei said the goal is to start down the path of rebuilding the country by reforming the laws and regulations that have hindered, slowed down, and halted the growth of the economy, so that the public sector can function better and freedom and autonomy can be returned to the individual. About 5,000 civil servants are affected by this policy, but the Association of State Workers (ATE) says the exact number should be more than 7,000. The news of the non-renewal of the contracts of some civil servants triggered a wave of protests, but Javier Milei has vowed to persevere in the implementation of the policy.
