To Deter Russian Incursion, Germany Deploys Troops Permanently to Lithuania

Germany recently (18) signed an agreement with Lithuania, in order to defend the Russian threat to NATO (NATO), will send about 4,800 German troops in Lithuania in the future. This is the first time since the end of World War II that the German army has deployed troops outside the country.

According to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, the units will be transferred to Lithuania between 2025 and 2026, and will be ready and operational by 2007. Lithuania will prepare "attractive conditions" for the soldiers' families, such as German-language schools, kindergartens, housing and flights to and from Germany.

German Defense Minister Pistorius signs a contract with Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, confirming the roadmap for the German Garrison. Pistorius described the agreement as a "historic" moment, saying they would be like the Allied forces deployed in West Germany during the Cold War. The Germans agreed to stay in Lithuania until 2027 and to maintain a state of readiness during their deployment.

According to the agreement planning, Germany will send an advance force in the first half of next year, deployed to Lithuania near the Russian border, the first commander will be stationed by the end of the year, the beginning of the move to Lithuania in 2025, it is expected that three years will be completed the establishment of the force, and has the ability to fight, including 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilians, which will become a brigade-sized force with two combat battalions as the core.
