Russian Anti-War Female Journalist Registers for Presidential Election, Contending with Putin for the Presidency
Russia will hold presidential elections next year, and while incumbent President Vladimir Putin is expected to be easily re-elected, Yekaterina Duntsova, a former TV reporter and mother of three, has registered to run, advocating against the Russo-Ukrainian war and saying that her candidacy scares her.
Russia will hold a presidential election on March 17 next year, and incumbent President Vladimir Putin is expected to be re-elected after amending the constitution to extend his presidential term to 2036, which is expected to be a smooth transition. Even so, Yekaterina Duntsova, a 40-year-old former television journalist, has registered to run.
Yekaterina Duntsova advocates the release of political prisoners such as Navalny and opposes "special military operations" with Ukraine. Yekaterina Duntsova also said she was afraid that Putin's opponents would either be jailed, imprisoned or exiled, but she decided to run anyway out of fear that she could never win. To qualify, Yekaterina Duntsova must obtain 300,000 signatures in support of her candidacy in all parts of Russia by January 31 of next year.
