WHO: Gaza Healthcare System Paralyzed, 1 Child Dies Every 10 Minutes
World Health Organization (WHO) Secretary General Tedros told the United Nations Security Council on 10 October that a child dies on average every 10 minutes in the Gaza Corridor, adding that "no place is safe".
According to foreign media reports, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that half of the 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip and two-thirds of the primary health care centers are not functioning, and those that are still functioning are unable to cope. Hospital corridors are overcrowded with patients, morgues are full, there is a lack of anesthesia and other medical resources, and there is an influx of displaced people.
As of October 7, the World Health Organization had verified at least 250 attacks on medical facilities in Gaza and the West Bank, and 25 attacks on Israeli medical facilities. Israel has denied claims that Hamas hid weapons in tunnels under hospitals.
Remembering his upbringing during the civil war in Ethiopia, Tedros understands that children in Gaza must experience fear, pain and loss.
