OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Kurz and OSCE Secretary General Greminger denounce latest nuclear test in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as threat to stability in the region
OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, and OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger condemned in the strongest terms the latest nuclear test in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
“The nuclear test is a reckless act by North Korea in times of heightened tensions in the region. The systematic disregard for international law and United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions is unacceptable for the international community. I call on the Security Council to react swiftly. Together, we must give a resolute, united and unequivocal answer to this persisting, irresponsible sequence of serious provocations. As OSCE we stand ready to support any action approved by the United Nations,” said Kurz.
Foreign Minister Kurz pointed out that North Korea's declared nuclear test showed once more the need to make the current nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime more effective. “North Korea must stop enhancing its nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities. Instead it has to return immediately to the negotiation table and must refrain from further increasing tensions," Kurz concluded.
Secretary General Thomas Greminger said: “I am deeply concerned by North Korea’s irresponsible provocation in disregard of UN Security Council resolutions. I urgently call on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to abandon its aggressive collision course and go back to respecting international norms.”
The official statement by the DPRK announcing that it carried out its sixth nuclear test came hours after seismologists had detected strong tremors in an area where North Korea had conducted previous nuclear tests. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea borders on OSCE participating State Russia as well as OSCE Partners for Co-operation the Republic of Korea and Japan.
