Urgent Help Reaches Families After Mudslides In Panjakent
The Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CoES) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have provided immediate food assistance to the households affected by mudflows in Panjakent.
After heavy rains and strong winds on 26 June severe mudflows hit Jamoat Amondara of Panjakent districts of Sughd Province (North). Mudflows damaged a number of critical infrastructure and killed livestock. Food support was immediately needed for some 500 people.
CoES conducted on June 27-28 a rapid assessment with WFP Tajikistan. More than 6 mt of mixed food commodities, namely wheat flour, vegetable oil, iodized salt and pulses were dispatched from a WFP warehouse on 28 June and distributed to the worst affected population.
Present in Tajikistan since 1993, WFP has always been among the first organisations with CoES to respond to humanitarian emergencies. In May 2016 WFP provided more than 7 mt of food to the flood-affected households of Panjakent. Overall, last year WFP provided food assistance worth almost 80 000 USD to people hurt by natural disasters in Tajikistan.
WFP is an active member of the Rapid Emergency Assessment Coordination Team (REACT), chaired by CoES, and contributes to achieve the objectives of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. For sudden emergencies, WFP keeps 3 months worth of food to distribute quickly. In May 2017, WFP and CoES signed a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration in the area of Emergency Preparedness and Response, Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation.
The Chairman of CoES, Mr. Nazarzoda Rustam expressed his gratitude to WFP for the immediate emergency response and presented a letter of appreciation to the Country Director, Mr. Paolo Mattei.
Over the last 24 years WFP has distributed food to more than one million people at a value of over 300 million USD In Tajikistan.
