The General Rapporteur on abolition of the death penalty for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Yves Cruchten (Luxembourg, SOC), has strongly condemned three executions carried out in the Gaza Strip by Hamas.

“These barbaric executions must stop. The death penalty is cruel and inhuman wherever it occurs, but these men were reportedly executed on the basis of unfair proceedings in military courts,” he said.

“The Palestinian National Council (PNC), as part of its ‘Partnership for democracy’ with the Assembly, has undertaken to maintain a moratorium on executions and work towards total abolition,” Mr Cruchten pointed out.

“I urge our PNC partners to intervene with Hamas to halt all executions in Gaza and to abolish the death penalty in Palestinian law, as underlined in recent Assembly resolutions.”

Under the partnership, six Palestinian members are able to take part in the work of the Assembly, though without the right to vote.

No executions are carried out in the 47 member states of the Council of Europe.
