Kuwait Continues To Support WFP’s Humanitarian Operations In Syria

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomed a contribution of U S$6 million from the Government of Kuwait to support WFP’s humanitarian operations in Syria on Nov 15.

WFP will use the funds to provide a nutritious school snack of date bars for more than 450,000 children as well as provide nearly 240,000 children with Plumpy Doz, a special nutritional supplement that prevents and treats malnutrition. The contribution will also allow WFP to provide rice to meet the food needs of more than one million people for one month.

“The humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate and as fighting persists, more and more people are struggling to survive. WFP strives to meet the urgent food needs of nearly six million displaced people in Syria and in neighbouring countries. We appreciate the support of the Government of Kuwait in helping WFP meet the needs of the Syrians,” said Muhannad Hadi, WFP Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and East Europe.

In Syria, WFP is providing food assistance to people affected by conflict, malnourished children, pregnant women and nursing mothers. WFP is also implementing projects that help re-build communities and restore livelihoods such as training and capacity-building projects, school feeding and nutrition interventions.
WFP reaches more than four million people every month across Syria with urgently-needed food and provides electronic food vouchers to up to 1.5 million refugees in neighbouring countries.

The Government of Kuwait has been a strong supporter of WFP’s humanitarian projects. Since the beginning of the Syrian conflict, Kuwait has hosted a number of annual pledging conferences for Syria. The Government of Kuwait has also co-hosted the London Conference last February where it announced substantial multi-million dollar pledges to alleviate the suffering of Syrians. Since 2013, Kuwait has pledged over US$130 million to support WFP’s humanitarian operations in Syria as well as other operations globally such as in Iraq, the Philippines, Somalia and North Korea.
