Israel says it has completed a successful test of its interceptor missile, Magic Wand.

Also known as David's Sling, Magic Wand downed a "short-range ballistic missile" in the morning trial in south Israel, the Israeli Defense Ministry said.

This was the second test of the system, which is being developed in partnership with the United States.

Israeli officials said Magic Wand could be ready for deployment as early as next year.

The system is designed to intercept and destroy short-range ballistic missiles with ranges between 100 and 200 kilometers such as such as Iran's Shehabs or Syria's Scuds. It could also provide a counter to missiles held by Hezbollah.

Magic Wand’s short-range capability is designed to complement Israel’s existing defenses against airborne attack. The Iron Dome missile system counters short-range rocket and artillery attacks, while the Arrow system counters long-range ballistic missiles.

The Magic Wand interceptor underwent its first operational test a year ago. It is being manufactured jointly by Israel's state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and U.S. firm Raytheon Co.
