Mali's transitional president expected to return to country
Mali's transitional President Dioncounda Traore who has been in Paris since May 24 to receive medical treatment after being attacked by demonstrators could return to the country "in the coming days", a well placed source told Xinhua on Sunday.
The revelations were made by an official of the Front for Safeguarding Democracy and the Republic (FDR), a grouping of political parties and associations that were created after the March 22 coup d'etat.
"Contrary to what some people are saying, the president of the republic is doing well both morally and physically," the FDR official who did not wish to be named said.
"The president of the republic is preparing to return to the country in the coming days," the source affirmed.
On Thursday last week, FDR sent a delegation to Paris to try and push for the speedy return of president Traore to the country.
Traore, 70, who is the immediate former Speaker of parliament, took an oath of office as the interim president on April 12 for a period ending on May 22, 2012.
Before the expiry of Traore's term, the mediators from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Mali's military junta agreed that he should govern the country during the transition period which was fixed at one year. The agreement pushed the youthful supporters of the junta to go to the streets.
On May 22, 2012, the demonstrators invaded the presidential palace and attacked Traore.
It will be recalled that the offensive of the rebel movements in the north plunged Mali into a humanitarian and political crisis which forced soldiers to overthrow the regime of president Amadou Toumani Toure on March 22.
