Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has expressed concern over ethnic violence in the north and west of Burma.

On Saturday she said hostilities were still occurring between some groups, without intervention by the government.

She noted 50 people had died in fighting between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and ethnic Rohingya Muslims over the past few weeks.

Ms Suu Kyi said the communal violence had resulted in murder and arson, especially in the west of Myanmar.

The UN refugee agency has asked neighbouring Bangladesh to take refugees from the violence.

Bangladesh has so far refused to take women, children and wounded people from the Rohingya Muslim community trying to flee the fighting.

On Saturday, Myanmar's pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has made her Nobel acceptance speech, 21 years after receiving the peace prize.

The 66-year-old opposition leader travelled to Norway's capital Oslo, making her first trip to Europe in 24 years.

She told the assembled audience at Oslo City Hall: "As you look at me and listen to me, please remember the often repeated truth that one prisoner of conscience is one too many. Those who have not yet been freed, those who have not yet been given access to the benefits of justice in my country number much more than one. Please remember them and do whatever is possible to affect their earliest unconditional release."
