Afghan prison officials sacked following breakout
The Afghanistan government has announced the dismissal of prison officers, accusing them of negligence in allowing prisoners to escape.
Five personnel were sacked following the 32-prisoner breakout from the jail in the northern province of Sari Pul last Thursday.
Many of the escapees were Taliban members or serious criminals.
While some of the prisoners have now been recaptured, the local police chief, the prison director and three other prison employees have been told to report to Kabul where they will be further questioned.
Government officials have alleged the police chief and the director of the prison had been negligent in their duties in failing to prevent the attack on the jail, which occurred following a large explosion which was set by members of the Taliban.
After the bomb blew a hole in the prison wall Taliban gunmen entered the complex sparking clashes between themselves, prison guards and other inmates.
Three inmates were left dead in the attack.
