The current al Qaeda chief, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has released an Internet tape on which he says the late founder of al Qaeda spent most of his money financing attacks, including the September 11th, 2001 Twin Tower and Pentagon incidents in the US.

In the Internet video Zawahiri says: "The rich sheikh Osama has spent all his money on jihad. He spent generously, especially on the September 11 attacks and the attacks against the US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam."

Zawahiri's message paints Bin Laden as an "austere" man in his personal life, describing him as "very stingy in spending on anything other than jihad."

Zawahiri, who took charge of the group following the death of Bin Laden in a US raid on his Pakistan house, is believed to be writing his memoirs on life with Bin Laden.

Osama Bin Laden was from a wealthy Saudi family which is still involved in the construction industry.
