Romney secures Republican nomination with Texas win
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has clinched the Republican presidential nomination in the Texas primary, a victory that has put him at the top in the delegate chase.
Romney now has the 1,144 delegates to secure the nomination and challenge President Barack Obama in the November elections.
Romney, who began the day with 1,086 delegates, won most of the 152 at stake in the Texas vote.
Romney said he was humbled to have won enough delegates to become the presidential nominee.
"I am honored that Americans across the country have given their support to my candidacy and I am humbled to have won enough delegates to become the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nominee," Romney said.
However, his nomination will not be official until the Republican National Convention, to be held in August in Florida.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama has called Romney to congratulate him on winning the Republican nomination.
Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said that the president had called Romney to congratulate him.
"President Obama said that he looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America's future, and wished Governor Romney and his family well throughout the upcoming campaign," said LaBolt.
A Romney campaign spokesman said that the call had been "brief and cordial".
"Governor Romney thanked the president for his congratulations and wished him and his family well," the official said.
