The chief of the UN nuclear watchdog Monday said talks with Iran's top nuclear negotiator were "positive", Iranian state TV reported, as he was slated to hold discussions with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Yukiya Amano separately met Iran's nuclear energy head Saeed Jalili, and atomic energy head Abbasi Davani in an effort to push for greater cooperation between Tehran and the UN agency and for access to Iranian nuclear facilities.

"We held expanded and intensive negotiations in a good atmosphere," Amano was quoted as saying by Iranian media after the meeting.

Amano's one-day visit to Iran came ahead of Wednesday's meeting in Baghdad between representatives of Iran and the permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the US - plus Germany, also known as P51.

The Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation issued a statement after the meeting with Amano saying issues were raised "in a frank manner and proposals were made to remove ambiguities and to develop cooperation", but did not elaborate.

Amano was also to hold discussions with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

Iran has rejected IAEA requests to inspect its underground Parchin military complex where the Western powers allege atomic weapons research is going on. Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful.
