Iran has warned that the US won't be safe from retaliation if the Islamic republic was attacked, according to a newspaper report quoting a senior army commander in Tehran.

"In the face of any attack, we will have a crushing response. In that case, we will not only act within the boundaries of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, but no place in America will be safe from our attacks," Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri was quoted as saying by the daily Iran.

Jazayeri is the deputy head of the Iranian Armed Forces.

In the report, Jazayeri however said Iran would not strike any country first.

"America, the Zionists and reactionary Arabs should pay attention that we will seriously confront them wherever the Islamic Republic's interests are threatened."

Iran is currently facing economic sanction from the US and other Western nations over its alleged military nuclear programme. But Tehran says its nuclear ambitions are only for civilian and peaceful usage.

Israel and the US have threatened military action against Iran unless it abandons the nuclear activities.

Iranian officials have warned in the past that its response to any military strike would be painful and has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, the oil shipping thoroughfare.

There is a hope that crucial talks between Iran and world powers could take place this month in an attempt to break the logjam.

The most recent talks failed in January 2011 after Iran refused to suspend its sensitive uranium enrichment work, as demanded by several UN resolutions.
