Northern Italy hit by flash floods, entire towns cut off
Described as an inland tsunami, northern towns in Italy have been hit by flash flooding that left at least five people dead and several missing Wednesday.
According to local media reports, all the villages within the Vara River valley were overwhelmed with floodwaters pouring through towns and destroying cars and buildings.
Scenes broadcast on national teleivision showed cars piled on top of one another in the towns of Brugnato, while other images showed water rushing through the streets of Monterosso as though the town itself were a river.
The torrential rains swept across northern Italy Tuesday and Wednesday, the flash floods destroying bridges and cutting off electricity and fresh water supplies to several towns.
The situation has left many communities stranded, while Italian rescue services say they’ve had trouble reaching some isolated locations.
The Italian government has warned that similar storms are expected further south, as well as the potential for deadly flash flooding.
