China-North Korea suffer flood damage from burst banks
People in China and North Korea have been trying to escape the rising waters of the Yalu River, which has risen quickly due to torrential rains.
The number of people evacuated due to the flooding in China has risen to more than 250,000 people, most of whom were close to the border with North Korea.
Villages and towns have been inundated over the past couple of days in the area of the boundary that separates the two countries.
The Chinese government has launched a rescue operation, included the dispatch of helicopters to airlift people stranded on rooftops.
In neighbouring North Korea, more than 5,000 people have been moved to safety after areas of Sinuiju city were completely flooded.
The official Korean Central News Agency has said flood victims were stranded on rooftops and on hills around Sinuiju city.
Kim Jong-Il, the North’s leader, has ordered a massive emergency rescue operation according to the paper.
New downpours are expected in various areas for another 24 hours.
