Iraq loses American troops after seven years
4,000 US troops were killed during the Iraq war since 2003, started in Baghdad
The US has finally ended its combat operations in Iraq.
The last US combat brigade has withdrawn from Iraq, after being part of an operation that saw the US in the country for more than seven years.
4,000 US troops were killed during the Iraq war, which began with George W Bush’s "shock and awe" bombing campaign of Baghdad in March 2003.
The last brigade left the country in the early hours of Thursday morning, two weeks before an August 31st deadline for the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Soldiers from the 4th Stryker brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, left for the border with Kuwait, where many US troops have assembled for transport home.
But a few hundred Army staff members were temporarily left behind in Iraq to complete administrative and logistical duties.
They are expected to leave Baghdad later on Thursday.
