"The number of children in Yemen who have been killed as a result of conflict over the last 10 weeks is four times that of all those confirmed to have been killed in 2014. At least 279 children have been killed and 402 injured since the escalation of violence in Yemen which began on 26 March 2015, compared with 74 and 244, respectively, that were reported in the whole of last year.

ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly: "Do not restrict human rights in the name of cultural diversity," said Louis Michel

"There can be no cultural relativism where human rights are concerned," said Louis Michel (ALDE, BE) on Monday, at the start of the 29th meeting of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, in Suva, Fiji. He said human rights could not be breached in the name of cultural diversity, adding that this issue was at the heart of discussions in Europe, as well as in the ACP states.

UNICEF and Hungary sign agreement for UNICEF Global Services Centre

The Government of Hungary and UNICEF signed an agreement to establish UNICEF’s Global Shared Services Centre in Budapest on June 15. The new centre – the first of its kind for the global children’s organisation – aims to improve efficiency and cut costs by centralising key finance and human resources operations.

Children under threat from renewed violence in eastern Ukraine

More than 240 children have been injured or killed since start of conflict

At least 68 children are reported to have been killed and 180 injured since March last year as a result of conflict in eastern Ukraine, UNICEF said on June 12. While no children were reportedly killed in the latest escalation near the town of Mariinka, west of Donetsk, there are anecdotal reports of children having been injured by heavy weapons fire.
