Investing in Education Quality Can Lead to More Equitable Growth in Côte d’Ivoire

Possessing the second highest growth rate in Sub-Saharan Africa, Côte d'Ivoire must now seek to strengthen its human capital by improving its education system and the quality of public expenditure allocated to the sector if it is to obtain greater equitable growth going forward. This is one of the key findings of the latest World Bank Economic Update on Côte d'Ivoire titled “The Skills Challenge: Why Côte d'Ivoire Must Reform Its Education System”.

Brazil: Education union mobilises new faces to defend quality public education

At its recent Congress, the Confederaçao Nacional dos Trabalhadores em Educação’s implemented change by electing a new Executive Board and called for a national education strike to defend quality public education.

Democratic and education challenges face the new Executive Board elected by the Confederaçao Nacional dos Trabalhadores em Educação (CNTE) at its 33rd Congress in Brasília on 15 January. The union, representing Brazilian basic level public school education workers, also approved a national education strike, scheduled to start on 15 March.

Global movement to eradicate violence and bullying in schools

Education unions made significant contributions during discussions at the International Symposium on School Violence and Bullying on the roles and abilities of teachers to combat the issue.

Bullying, cyberbullying and violence in schools were the main focus of the International Symposium on School Violence and Bullying: From evidence to action, organised by UNESCO in Seoul, South Korea, from 17-19 January. That’s according to Pathma Krishnan from the Education International (EI) Asia-Pacific Regional Office, who was one of over 270 participants at the event. Attendees represented education ministries, civil society organisations, teachers’ unions and other organisations working in the education sector in 70 countries.
