UNESCO Global Forum: Uses and misuses of university rankings

Are university rankings a good measure for comparing institutions of higher education? Are the criteria used in ranking systems relevant to students everywhere? Do they wield too much influence on policies of universities? These questions will be at the heart of an international forum, organised by UNESCO, the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to be held at UNESCO, 16-17 May (Room 2).

Harvard to award degree to student who died in 1665 just before Commencement

Harvard's 1650 charter specifically cited its role in the education of “English and Indian youth” and in 1655 the Harvard Indian College was founded. In April 2010, a Wampanoag home, called a wetu, was built on the site of the Indian College. The University recently announced that it will honor one of the first Native Americans ever to attend Harvard College with a special posthumous degree at its 2011 Commencement exercises on May 26.

U.S. Department of State and U.S. Soccer Announce 2011 Soccer Initiative, Kicks-Off Exchanges in Germany

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and U.S. Soccer announced today that former U.S. Women’s National Team players Briana Scurry and Amanda Cromwell will serve as sports diplomats May 1-7 in the first wave of soccer exchanges slated for this year. Scurry and Cromwell will travel to Germany, which will host the 2011 Women’s World Cup. They will conduct soccer clinics with youth, meet with high school and university students, and participate in local community events in Berlin, Dresden, Wolfsburg, Sinsheim, and Frankfurt.

Niobe Way conducted hundreds of interviews with boys from 11 to 18 and found that more than 85 percent of her respondents suggested their closest friends, especially those during early and middle adolescence, “share the plot of ‘Love Story’ more than the plot of ‘Lord of the Flies.’” She argues such friendships fade as they age because of ingrained societal norms.
