UNESCO’s 2011 Literacy Prizewinners: Working for peace and gender equality

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today announced the six winners of the Organization’s International Literacy Prizes for 2011, a selection made on the recommendation of an international jury, which met between 4 and 8 July in Paris.

The theme of this year’s prizes is literacy and peace, with special consideration to gender equality. Prizewinners include programmes in Burundi, Mexico, the United States of America, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with honourable mentions to programmes in Pakistan and the Philippines. The prizes will be awarded at an official ceremony on 8 September during International Literacy Day celebrations in New Delhi, India.

Statement of the Fourth Lower Mekong Initiative Ministerial Meeting

On July 22, 2011, the Foreign Ministers and senior representatives of the Lower Mekong Basin countries -- Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Viet Nam -- and the U.S. Secretary of State met in Bali, Indonesia for the 4th Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) Ministerial Meeting. The five participants emphasized the value of the LMI in addressing regional challenges, particularly in the areas of education, environment, health, and infrastructure.

Education for All means more than primary education, declare world leaders at ECOSOC

Countries participating in the 2011 High-Level Segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted a ministerial declaration on 8 July that recognizes the strong links between education and progress towards all the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), thus placing education at the heart of development.

The Declaration, unanimously adopted, notes the importance of moving beyond the second MDG of universal primary education in favour of a more holistic and inclusive vision of education systems.
