UNICEF, UNHCR, Save the Children, World Vision and other partners called for governments, aid agencies and members of the public to become champions for the children of Syria and support the “No Lost Generation” strategy, which aims to provide those affected by the conflict with the chance to shape a more stable and secure future.

Tanzania: Workshop promotes quality public education in rural schools

A book writers’ workshop was organised by EI’s affiliates in Tanzania in collaboration with the national Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT), in Dar es Salaam, from 2-11 September. The workshop was organised by the Pan African Teachers’ Centre (PATC)-EI Africa’s regional office, under the umbrella of EI’s Unite for Quality Education (Unite) campaign.

European citizens’ initiative defends education spending

EI has welcomed a European Citizens’ Initiative calling on governments not to count education spending as part of the deficit. The initiative proposes to “exclude from the calculation of each country's public spending deficit, that part of Government spending for education that is lower than the last five-year Eurozone average”.

At a packed meeting of experts and youth activists convened by UNESCO and other UN agencies, political and youth leaders from 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa reached an historic agreement in the response to HIV. Recognising the urgency of the situation facing young people, education and health ministers have committed to addressing their realities by ramping up sexuality education and health services. Crucially, 2.6 million young people are living with HIV in this region, while deaths caused by AIDS among adolescents have risen globally by 50% since 2005 – in stark contrast to the overall global trend of a reduction of AIDS-related deaths.
