The annual representative word of the year for 2023 announced in the Oxford Dictionary
The Oxford University Press (OUP) announced the Oxford Dictionary's word of the year for 2023, and a team of experts and members of the public voted for "rizz," which means "a person's ability to gain the attention of others through his or her style, charm, and attractiveness," and is a favorite of Generation Z. The hashtag for "rizz" on the social media outlet TikTok has had billions of views.
According to media reports, "rizz" is an emerging Internet slang term derived from the word "charisma," which is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as style, charm, or attraction; the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner. The term is mostly used by young Internet users, but it can also be used as a verb in phrases such as "to rizz up," which means "to attract, seduce, or hit on (a person).
Oxford Publishing says "rizz" first appeared in 2022, until Spider-Man actor Tom Holland used the word "rizz" in an interview in June this year, saying, "I have no rizz whatsoever, I have limited rizz," thus causing rizz to explode in popularity on the Internet.
