Google's new quantum technology chip solves billion-year problem in 5 minutes
A few days ago, Google said that its latest chip called "Willow" has overcome the key challenges of quantum computing and can complete a problem in less than 5 minutes that would take a traditional computer a billion years to solve.
"Willow" has 105 quantum bits (qubits). In the past, qubit operations were fast, but they were also error-prone. When a chip integrates more qubits, the error rate is higher, so the performance will not be better than traditional ones. The computer is good. Therefore, scientists have been working on solving the error correction problem of qubits since the 1990s.
Now Google has found a way to connect "Willow" chip qubits in series, which can not only increase the number of qubits and reduce the error rate, but also correct errors in real time. This is a major progress in the practical application of quantum computers. Google also recently published this research result in the well-known scientific journal Nature.
It is reported that Google previously manufactured chips through equipment shared with the University of California, Santa Barbara; Google is currently building a new factory to produce future chips. Although the Google Quantum Laboratory can complete mathematical problems with quantum operations, it is not yet available for commercial applications. Google hopes that future quantum computers will be able to solve difficult problems such as medical care, battery chemistry, and artificial intelligence (AI) that traditional computers cannot handle.
Scientists in the field of quantum computing regard Google's achievement as a major milestone in the scientific community and a major technological breakthrough in the field of quantum computing. The industry also said that quantum computing can significantly improve the speed and performance of artificial intelligence computing, which also includes artificial intelligence model training and big data processing.
