First Civilian Spacewalk Successfully Completed, Mission Returns Safely to Earth
The Crew Dragon spacecraft, used by SpaceX's Polaris Dawn mission team, splashed down off the coast of Florida at 3:37 AM Eastern Time on the 15th, successfully concluding the historic first civilian spacewalk mission carried out by non-government astronauts.
The Polaris Dawn mission, led by billionaire Jared Isaacman, successfully conducted the world's first civilian spacewalk on the 12th as planned. Isaacman was the first to exit the spacecraft and returned about 15 minutes later, followed by SpaceX senior engineer Sarah Gillis, who conducted a 20-minute spacewalk.
The Crew Dragon launched from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on the 10th. During the mission, it ventured into the Van Allen radiation belts, 1,400 kilometers from Earth, to study the effects of spaceflight and radiation on human health, while also testing SpaceX’s newly developed spacesuits.
