Less Passion, Less Productivity
The vast majority of workers lack passion for their jobs, according to a new survey from Deloitte. Passionate workers are more likely to seek challenges and foster innovation, but most organizations fail to cultivate productive environments for their employees. The recent recession is part of the problem. "By squeezing resources tighter, companies risk losing passionate employees," says John Hagel, co-chairman of Deloitte's Center for the Edge, which produced the survey. "These individuals will play a critical role in sustaining the extreme performance improvement required for firms to survive and succeed beyond the recovery. Unfortunately, as the recovery picks up steam, these very employees are likely to be the most at risk for fleeing for better employment platforms." Another key survey finding: A significant number of employees would like to set out on their own as independent contractors or consultants, a move that often sparks professional passion.
