Ships that carry petroleum to Iran are facing added scrutiny at Middle Eastern ports due to the new western sanctions.

Shipping agents have said the Islamic Republic is attempting to find alternative ports for its trade in fuel cargoes, which have mostly been excluded from the sanctions.

Ship owners, fearful of being in breach of the measures, have been under greater scrutiny from port authorities who have been asked to help police the sanctions.

A number of governments have been put under pressure to provide more information to the US, which does not want to have its own people on the ground to watch Iranian ships at the docks.

Countries are also fearful that their diplomatic relations with the US might be frayed if sanction regulations aren't closely adhered to.

The West suspects Iran's nuclear work is aimed at bomb-making and last month imposed tight sanctions to squeeze Iran's fuel imports and increase its international isolation.
