Canadian government shocked by veiled women on plane
Canada's government has been embarrassed by a YouTube video which shows fully veiled women boarding a passenger airplane without having to show their faces to airline or immigration officers.
The Minister of Transportation, John Baird, has now ordered an investigation into how a group of veiled women, boarding an Air Canada flight from Montreal's Pierre-Elliott Trudeau airport to London's Heathrow airport on July 11, were able to walk onto the plane without challenge.
He said the Canadian government wants to ensure that airline personnel verify the identities of all passengers before they board a flight.
The video clip, shot by a British traveller, shows a man producing passports of four women to airline personnel.
The women, two with face veils and two without, are allowed to board the plane when the man is re-presented with their passports, without the women having to show their faces.
Minister Baird has referred to the footage as "deeply disturbing."
He said the incident posed a serious threat to the security of the air travelling public and he would take the necessary steps to ensure safety and security in the air.
