Man arrested after extradition from Indonesia for people smuggling offences

A six-year investigation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has ended with the arrest of a man alleged to have smuggled people into Australia.

The 33-year-old Afghan man was formally charged with 27 people smuggling offences in Perth following his extradition from Indonesia to Australia.

The man was arrested for his alleged involvement in organising and facilitating suspected illegal entry vessels from Indonesia to Australia including:
•a suspected illegal entry vessel carrying 55 potential illegal immigrants which arrived on 25 April 2009
•a suspected illegal entry vessel carrying 51 potential illegal immigrants which arrived on 5 May 2009
•a suspected illegal entry vessel carrying 103 potential illegal immigrants which arrived on 11 August 2011

On 24 August 2011 the man was arrested and detained by Indonesian authorities.

On Thursday 13 August 2015 the man was surrendered to AFP officers in Jakarta. The AFP officers then escorted the man to Perth.

The man was formally charged by the AFP in Perth with three counts of people smuggling (at least five people) under sections 232A and 233C of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth), the charges also included 11 counts of taking part in people smuggling (individuals) under section 233(1)(a) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) and 13 counts of people smuggling (individuals) under section 233A of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).

The maximum penalty for these offences is 20 years or 2,000 penalty units, or both (Section 232A and Section 233C of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth)); and 10 years or 1,000 penalty units, or both (Section 233(1)(a) and Section 233A of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth)).

He is scheduled to face the Perth Magistrates Court on 14 August.
