Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and Australian Federal Police press 'pause' on meth import
A 63-year-old German man will face Melbourne Magistrate court charged with attempting to import approximately two kilograms of methamphetamine into Australia.
Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) officers selected the man for a baggage examination when he arrived on flight from Singapore on Sunday, 1 June 2014.
During the examination officers found a digital video recorder in the man’s luggage. Deconstruction of the recorder revealed a white crystalline substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.
ACBPS Regional Commander Victoria, Graham Krisohos, said that Customs and Border Protection has the skills and capabilities to detect and investigate illegal drugs no matter how they are disguised.
“If you attempt to smuggle dangerous and prohibited drugs into Australia, you will be caught and could face serious penalties," Mr Krisohos said.
The matter was referred to Australian Federal Police who charged the man with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug contrary to section 307.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 and possessing commercial quantities of unlawfully imported border controlled drugs or border controlled plants section 307.5 of the Criminal Code Cth 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment and/or a $1,275,000 fine.
Further forensic testing will confirm the exact weight and purity of the substance.
