21-year-old man to face court over importation of 16kg of ‘ice’

2013-12-30

A 21-year-old Taiwanese man is scheduled to appear before the Parramatta Local Court this morning, charged by Australian Federal Police (AFP) for attempting to possess approximately 16kg of methamphetamine ‘ice’.

On 15 December, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service officers at the NSW air cargo facility detected the methamphetamine concealed inside eight metal shafts. The cargo had arrived from China. The matter was then referred to the AFP for investigation.

It will be alleged that the man, who entered Australia on a visitor’s visa on 26 December 2013, attempted to access the methamphetamine by opening the shafts. This process was undertaken inside a self-storage unit in inner-Sydney, which had been rented for the purpose of receiving the shipment.

16 kilograms of methamphetamine has a street value of approximately $12,800,000.

The man has been charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, contrary to Section 307.5 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $1,275,000.

Investigations into this matter remain ongoing.
