Luther Jones and Gilbert Sanchez Receive Additional Federal Prison Time in Connection with El Paso Corruption Case
This afternoon in El Paso, former El Paso attorney Luther Jones and former El Paso County District Clerk Gilbert Sanchez were sentenced to 63 months and 24 months in federal prison, respectively, for their roles in a scheme to defraud the Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) and the citizens living within of their right to honest services, announced United States Attorney Robert Pitman and Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Mark Morgan.
In addition to the prison terms, United States District Judge Frank Montalvo ordered that Jones and Sanchez be placed under supervised release for a period of three years following their respective prison terms. Judge Montalvo also ordered that Sanchez pay $5,000 restitution. Restitution for Jones has yet to be determined.
Earlier this year, Jones and Sanchez pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and deprivation of right to honest services. By pleading guilty, Jones and Sanchez admitted that from September 2003 until 2007, they conspired with others to secure by means of fraud and bribery a multi-million-dollar health care services contract between YISD and Access Healthsource Inc.
Jones and Sanchez are the first of 10 defendants charged in this indictment who have entered guilty pleas to be sentenced. Jury selection for the remaining defendant, Guillermo “Willie” Gandara, Sr., is scheduled for September 4, 2012.
On August 15, 2011, Jones and Sanchez were each sentenced to six years in federal prison for conspiring with others in a scheme to secure a multi-million-dollar document imaging contract between El Paso County and one of Luther Jones’ clients. This afternoon, Judge Montalvo ordered that the sentences handed down to each defendant, in both cases, run concurrently.
