Guilty Verdict for Kickbacks to a Bank Officer
Michael J. Moore, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, announced today that Joseph Wiley Jordan, a resident of Albany, Georgia, was found guilty of four felony counts related to making kickbacks to a bank officer after a four-day jury trial. The case was tried before the Honorable W. Louis Sands, United States District Judge, in Albany Georgia.
Defendant Jordan was convicted of the following:
Count one: conspiracy to make bribes or kickbacks to a bank officer, a violation of Title 18 United States Code, Section 215(a)(1) i/c/w Section 371, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and one year of supervised release.
Counts three, four, and five of the indictment charged substantive acts of bribes or kickbacks, violations of Title 18 United States Code, Section 215(a)(1). These offenses carry a penalty of up to 30 years’ imprisonment, a $1,000,000 fine or three times the value of the kickback, and five year’s supervised release.
The defendant was found not guilty of count two, which also charged a violation of Title 18 United States Code, Section 215(a)(1).
United States Attorney Moore stated, “Especially during challenging economic times, we will not tolerate this kind of fraud. The financial system works when we all play by the rules and obey the laws.”
Sentencing will be scheduled by the court within approximately two months.
