OSCE Mission to Montenegro condemns violence in pursuit of political aims, calls for peaceful engagement within democratic institutions
The OSCE Mission to Montenegro condemns the acts of violence that took place last night in Podgorica, which resulted in damage to property, including the Albanian Embassy, and injuries to police officers, journalists and civilians. Violence in the pursuit of political aims has no place in modern democratic societies.
The Mission looks to the relevant authorities to investigate fully all incidents that have taken place, or may have taken place, and to prosecute those responsible in line with the law.
This Mission believes that the right to public assembly and right to public protest are legitimate tools in all democratic societies. Equally, the Mission reaffirms the view that such actions must be undertaken peacefully and in full accordance with the rule of law.
“I again urge all political parties to politically re-engage constructively and positively within the institution of the Parliament in the interests of the citizens, and respecting all political and other differences,” said Head of Mission Ambassador Janina Hrebickova. The responsibility for doing so rests firmly on all sides.
