Tackling intolerance and discrimination in Europe with a special focus on Christianity

A hearing on ‘Tackling intolerance and discrimination in Europe with a special focus on Christianity’ will be one of the highlights of the meeting of the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) which will be held in Vienna (Austrian Parliament) on 4 and 5 March 2014.

Participants in the hearing, scheduled at 2.30pm on Wednesday 5 March, include Gudrun Kugler, representing the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians, and Professor Stefan Hammer, Department of Legal Philosophy, Law of Religion and Culture, University of Vienna. The hearing is part of the preparation by Valeriu Ghiletchi (Republic of Moldova, EPP/CD) of a report on the subject.

On Tuesday 4 March, in the framework of a joint meeting with the Parliamentary Network ‘Women Free from Violence’, the Committee will hold a hearing on ‘Focusing on the victims’ needs’, with the participation of Luisella Pavan-Woolfe, Head of the Delegation of the EU to the Council of Europe and Ursula Till-Tentschert, Programme Manager at the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). The FRA representative will present some of the findings of a survey on violence against women in Europe, ahead of the EU official presentation in Brussels the following day.

It will be followed by an exchange of views with Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek, Austrian Federal Minister for Education and Women.

The parliamentarians will also hold an exchange of views with Ingrid Nikolay-Leitner, Austrian Ombudsperson for Equal Treatment, on the subject ‘Equality and non-discrimination: focus on Austria’.

The committee is due to adopt reports on ’Prostitution, trafficking and modern slavery in Europe’ (José Mendes Bota, Portugal, EPP/CD); ‘The situation and rights of traditional national minorities in Europe’ (Ferenc Kalmár, Hungary, EPP/CD); and “Improving co-operation between National Human Rights Institutions and Parliaments in addressing Equality and Non-Discrimination Issues (Katherine Zappone, Ireland, UEL).
