UNICEF condemns killings in school attack in Northeast Nigeria

2013-07-09

The deaths of students in yet another attack on a school in Northeast Nigeria should be condemned absolutely by all communities, UNICEF says.

“As we extend our sympathy to the families of the victims, we would say in the strongest possible terms that there can be no justification for the deliberate targeting of children and those looking after them,” said UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa Manuel Fontaine.

UNICEF calls for those responsible to be brought to justice and for communities to demand that schools be considered as places of safety. Since 16 June, it is reported that a total of 48 students and 7 teachers have been killed in four attacks in the region.
