Arizona has now gone along with 14 other US states in permitting medical marijuana.

By a narrow margin of about 4,300 votes, Arizona voters approved the ballot measure to legalise the drug.

According to unofficial results, more than 1.6 million votes were cast and all precincts agreed to Proposition 203.

In the close race, the result has ensured patients who suffer from cancer, AIDS and other illnesses will be able to alleviate their suffering by using medical marijuana with a recommendation from their doctor.

The bill was lobbied for by The Marijuana Policy Project, which promotes itself as the United States' largest marijuana policy reform organisation.

14 other states and the District of Columbia have also passed medical marijuana laws, where regulated clinics dispense marijuana.
