The All Nippon Airlines (ANA) Dreamliner 787 took off Wednesday from Tokyo on a flight to Hong Kong. The flight is a special charter, with normal services due to begin in November.

ANA was meant to receive its first 787 in 2008, but production of the new aircraft was held back by a string of delays.

The delays have hurt business, with China Eastern Airlines recently cancelling orders for 24 aircraft.

Boeing has indicated that from 2013 it plans to be producing 10 787s per month. Most of those builds will go to ANA, which has ordered dozens of the new plane design.

The Dreamliner 787 is said to be the most fuel-efficient plane of its size because of the materials used in its construction, making it lighter so that the plane uses 20% less fuel.
