US president wants more wind power
US President Barack Obama has put forward a proposal to extend tax benefits for the suppliers of wind power.
Speaking last week, the president said he would like Congress to pass a production tax credit, which is scheduled to expire at the end of the year.
At this stage, Congress will need to extend the credit to 2.2 cents per kilowatt-hour for the first ten years of electricity production from industrial turbines.
President Obama warned jobs would be lost and the country would lose its pathway to energy independence if Republicans in Congress were to let the credit system falter.
Since Barack Obama became president, the US has nearly doubled its use of renewable energy, especially in solar and wind power generation.
