Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, which exports gas to Israel, has made an announcement that the 2005 gas export accord will be repealed.

According to the Egyptian side, the deal was concluded due to contract conditions not being fulfilled.

The provision of gas to Israel for electricity has been unpopular in some Egyptian quarters due to animosity.

Some Egyptians view Israel as an enemy, even after
the 1979 peace treaty between the two sides.

A completion of the contract would have seen Egypt supplying gas to Israel in a US$2.5 billion export deal.

Israel was to have received 40 percent of its gas supply from Egypt at an agreed price.
