Severe Rainstorm Ravages Australia's Eastern Region
Heavy rain has fallen in parts of eastern Australia, flooding roads and ravaging the north-eastern state of New South Wales and the south-eastern state of Queensland overnight, with several towns receiving the equivalent of a full month's worth of rain in the past 24 hours.
Queensland's popular tourist attraction, the Gold Coast, was one of the worst hit by the storm, with many vehicles trapped on flooded roads and in low-lying areas. Mayor Tom Tate is urging people to stay home if they don't have to go out.
Federal Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt says the government is deploying about 70 veterans and retired emergency workers to south-east Queensland to assist with relief efforts from the recent heavy rainfall.
