Cold Wave Hits China, Multiple Regions Experience Record-Low Temperatures
The East Asian region has been hit by a strong cold wave, freezing for two days. Experts say that this wave of cold air is due to the leakage of the polar vortex from the North Pole, which has poured directly into the East Asian region. In South Korea, some car windows were so cold that they cracked. Records of low temperatures have also been reported in many parts of China.
A super cold front has hit China recently, with record low temperatures in Shandong and Liaoning. The cold wave has swept across the eastern half of the mainland, causing record snowfall in Shandong, and to the north in Liaoning province, where minus 28.2 degrees Celsius in Shenyang broke a nearly 10-year record, and 6,138 square kilometers of ice formed on the surface of the sea in the nearby Liaodong Bay.
Meteorological agencies said the snowfall was an "extreme weather event", with the amount and depth of snowfall breaking the historical extreme of cold stream snowstorms since records of meteorological observations were kept. Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, welcomed the "coldest" winter solstice in history, and even the Qiantang River was frozen over. The city of Weihai, known as the "Snow Nest", has been experiencing heavy snowfall for three days and nights, and the snow depth today reached 74 centimeters, breaking the record for Shandong.
