Nestle admits recycling is not enough to tackle plastic pollution crisis
Nestle announced on January 15 plans to accelerate its actions to tackle plastic pollution, which include making its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 and shifting to single-use paper and other alternatives.
In response, Greenpeace Global Plastics Project Leader Graham Forbes said:
“It’s good that Nestle is finally acknowledging the severity of the plastic pollution crisis by eliminating non-recyclable products and admitting that recycling is not enough, but the solution isn’t to simply shift to another throwaway material. These kinds of false solutions, which are not environmentally friendly, are what put us in this mess in the first place. We need Nestle to innovate away from the single use-model entirely. While the announcement is a step in the right direction, the company needs to scale up its efforts toward reusable systems rather than grasping at a quick fix that could cause further environmental disaster such as deforestation.”
