Hawaii says yes to biofuel refinery
Hawaii is to allow the erection of a biofuel refinery in order to get the country out of imported fuel purchases.
The first phase of a biorefinery plant is currently being built by Honeywell in Kapolei, 14 miles from Honolulu.
Following a $25 million US Department of Energy award, Honeywell said it would be able to speed up processes to have the bio facility testing fuel products by 2013.
The biomass which will be produced, will come from some Hawaiian crops, such as macadamia nuts and sugarcane.
Crop processing will allow the facility to make bio-based versions of all petroleum fuels.
Hawaii ships in about 45 million barrels of oil annually.
